found in lumberton, new jersey.

a write up from the newest issue of weird n.j. :

A statue that has been a fixture on the side of U.S. 13 in Delaware since 1984 is moving to join the weirdness that is New Jersey. The statue is eleven feet tall and 2,000 pounds and is alternately described as looking like either Buddha or a demon by the locals. It has obtained a patina of decay from decades of being outside, its eyes no longer lit by sinister red bulbs and its snaky accessories chipped off. An article from Delawareonline.com tells of the statue's history : it was a movie prop featured in movies such as The Prodigal [1955] and "at least one Tarzan film." It was purchased at an MGM prop auction and moved from one location to another in Delaware before finding its last home in Smyrna. It sat on the side of the road for 20 years, serving as a landmark for many traveling the highway and an eyesore for others. A Lumberton, NJ man bought the demon, intending to restore it and use it in his backyard as a mascot for his landscaping business. He says that there's a view of his backyard from a nearby highway, so don't be surprised if one night you happen to drive past a newly black and gold demon that stares at you with fiery red eyes and blows clouds of smoke, happy in his weird new home state. - Joanne Austin

If that was mine I would make the neighboorhood kids pay me to let them climb it. They'd have to sign a waver saying I'm not responsible for bodily injury or death though.

i only got as close as the fence. i did not want to be a jerk. they probably have people stopping by the side of the road to see it constantly. although, one could argue that by putting something like that in their yard they are asking for the attention. maybe i will investigate further....

That has to be a pretty different landscaping business.

I thought it was a minotaur, and presumed it would be in the middle of someone's hedge maze.

Now that would be cool.
